Maisha bora Project
This is a Belgium Food Security Programme in Longido District for five years (2015-2019). The programme aims to improve food security in 8 villages of Eworendeke, Mairowa, Matale A, Matale B, Orkejuloongishu, GilaiLumbwa, Ilchangi’tsapukin and Loondoluo. A combination of drought, land alienationand erosion of traditional livelihood systems has increased poverty levels and food insecurity. In most villages crop agriculture is not possible so most people depend on livestock products only. This one economic enterprise makes the villages extremely vulnerable.
The programme has two components of Water and business to the case of LCDO.
Business component
TRIAS Tanzania, one of the Maisha bora implementing partners coordinates the business component and the specific objective is Women, Youth and household income are more diversified and secured and used to increase quantity of food intake. LCDO as one of the implementing partner is responsible for the cooperatives, livestock marketing and food banks. Our activities are as follows:
- Promoting attitude change on selling cattle(commercial herds)
- Strengthening of 3 cooperatives in Longido for marketing livestock products
- Facilitate linkages between producers and buyers of livestock
- Promote small scale processing of hides and sins in rural centers
- Awareness raising on food budgeting , food and livestock price cycles
Water Component
Islands of Peace is responsible for the implementation of the water component of Maisha Bora programme and is working with LCDO as the local partner with the objective to improve sustainable access to adequate water for livestock taking into account the question of human drinking, human and livestock going to the same water points to get water. Islands of Peace and LCDO will implement a range of activitiesas follows;
- Analysis of the problem of access to water in the above 8 targeted villages
- Rehabilitation/Extension/strengthening of existing water points
- Construction of new water points
- Managementof water points
