This was a five years project, from 2009 to 2014 funded by Trias Tanzania. The program is called “Supporting Food Security and Livelihood Security through improved Livestock and Tourism in Pastoralist communities in Northern Tanzania”. The overall objective is Food and Livelihood Security for the target groups in Longido District and their active participation in local, social and economic development processes is enhanced in a sustainable way.
As contrasted with the first phase which operated in two districts, the second phase is confined to 4 marginal contiguous villages. The villages are Meirugoi, GelaiLumbwa, Orkejuloongishu and Noondoto. Due to political decisions two of the four villages have been subdivided into 4 villages, so there is an addition of two villages in administrative terms but the program continues to work in the same target groups regardless of new administrative boundaries.
As one of the programme partners, LCDO (Longido Community Development Organisation) was specialised in the promotion of education, socio-economic development and natural resource management for pastoral communities in Longido district. The role of LCDO in the programme was in the thematic areas of livestock production improvement, eco-tourism, livestock associations, livestock marketing, capacity building for gender balanced groups, management capacity of livestock keepers, HIV/AIDS and gender equity.
